“What is filial piety? Filial piety [is] an important virtue in [many philosophies] … [Filial piety] means to be good with one’s parents; to take care of one’s parents; to engage in good conduct not just towards parents but also outside the home to bring good name towards one’s parents and ancestors; to show love, respect and support; display courtesy; to ensure male heirs, uphold fraternity among brothers; wisely advise one’s parents, including dissuading them from moral unrighteousness; display sorrow for their sickness and death; to bury them and carry out sacrifices after their death … According to the Filial Piety Sutra, we should be pious towards our parents because of the ten kindnesses* our mother bestows upon us … [and] it is very hard to repay … [but] we should still do our best to repay their kindness.” ~Olivier Truong (11), Leader of Virtue Day

This month begins the year-long journey through the Eight Core Virtues at the Boys School. Every first Monday of a month, beginning in September, we introduce a new virtue. The virtues are as follows: filial piety, kindness, citizenship, trustworthiness, respect, fairness, integrity, humility. During each month, teachers will tackle the virtue, encouraging students to create projects and write reports on the respective virtue. Finally, in the month of June, there is a conclusive review of the year’s moral upbringing.
. . .
The introduction to the program went smoothly, with Olivier (11) giving a speech regarding the continuation of this monthly activity, as well as an all-inclusive brief on filial piety. Afterwards, each grade split into their respective classes to prepare a skit regarding filial piety. The message from the seniors: sacrifice for your parents. The essence of the junior skit: when our parents are in the wrong, we must guide them through virtue. The main point of the sophomore performance: appreciate the undying love of our parents. And finally, the crucial lesson taught by the junior high: by being filial, we are helping none other than ourselves.
. . .
We hope that regardless of the scenario, we will always be filial to our parents and respectful to our elders, as it’s the fundamental root of society.
