Curriculum

Instilling Goodness Developing Virtue School is a full academic program as required by the State of California. The curriculum reflects a commitment to educate the whole person. Accordingly, the elementary school emphasizes respect for parents, teachers, and elders, while the secondary school guides students to fulfill their personal and civic responsibilities, to cherish their families, their nation, and all living beings.

Kindergarten through Grade 8 offers a broad range of courses, including Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Chinese, Art, Music, Drama, Virtue Studies, Meditation, and Physical Education. The curriculum is designed with a holistic approach that nurtures a delight in learning for students.

Grades 9-12 offers a college preparatory curriculum that meets the A-G requirements of the University of California along with a strong selection of Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Students also have the opportunity to take additional courses at Mendocino College and other institutions. Developing Virtue Secondary School has been WASC-accredited since 2007.

The minimum units required for graduation in each subject area are:

  • English (40 units)
  • Social Studies *1 (30 units)
  • Mathematics (30 units)
  • Science (30 units)
  • Foreign Language *2 (30 units)
  • Religious Studies *3 (30 units)
  • Meditation (24 units)
  • Physical Education (20 units)
  • Visual or Performing Arts (10 units)
  • Electives (12 units)

Notes:*1. 10 units of World History & Geography, 10 units of U.S. History, 5 units of U.S. Government, 5 units of Economics. *2. The foreign language offered at our school is Chinese. *3. Intro to Buddhism, Ethics, Philosophy, and World Religions.

Advanced Placement Courses: Chinese, Calculus AB/BC, Physics E/M and Physics C, Economics (Micro), English Literature, English Language, Environmental Science, US History, World History, Art History* and Comparative Government*

*Offered only when there is student interest and an available instructor

Honors Courses: Chinese 5 & 6 and Pre-Calculus

College Level Courses: Includes all 200 level transferable college courses taken at Mendocino College or other approved colleges.
