The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated by many East and Southeast Asian countries and regions. On this day, lanterns of all size and shapes are carried and displayed as symbolic beacons that light people’s path to prosperity and good fortune. Moon cakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean and lotus-seed paste, are also customarily eaten during this festival.

Traditionally, students of Developing Virtue Boys School would reenact the story of Chang’e and Hou Yi to commemorate the well-known origin of the festival. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the school was unable to host an actual celebration, so the Juniors and Seniors decided to put together a virtual play to retell the melancholic story of Chang’e and Hou Yi.

The Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated by the Residence Hall students on Sunday, September 19. In honor of the festival, Residence Hall supervisor Mrs. Lau offered to provide the materials needed for the students to make some delicious moon cakes.

. . .

At 1 PM, students rushed into the Community Center with exuberance as Mrs. Lau arrived. After sanitizing their hands, the students immediately began their delicate and hard work. Making moon cake is no easy task; first, the students rolled the fillings into a long tube and separated them equally by weight. Then, they divided the dough into equal portions, making a thin, disk shape with it. Afterwards, the students wrapped and sealed the filling with the dough disc, and shaped the moon cake carefully with a mould. After baking the moon cakes for roughly 10 minutes, the students brushed the moon cakes with food coloring to make them look extra eye-catching. Finally, the students baked the moon cakes until they are ready to be served!

Following the moon cake production, the students distributed the freshly baked moon cakes to all the teachers as a note of appreciation. The hungry workers were then rewarded with tasty dinner.
