By Ms. Yidan Wang
The Grade 2 and 3 students performed a theatre show called There Is a Hole, based on Ms. Yidan Wang’s first picture book, which she plans to publish as an author. The book was turned into a lively theatre production guided by Ms. Miao Sandel, the director.
The story is based on a Buddhist idea: “Outside is the reflection of the inner; In every moment, you have a choice. You can choose to be happy, scared, sad, calm or angry.” The children explored different emotions and how they affect the way we see the world.
Each student played a character with an emotion. They spoke their lines, acted with feeling, and danced to their own music. Each character came to life on stage. Johnson acted as Rila the Rabbit, showing joy. Diana played Hermia the Hedgehog, showing fear. Claire was Polly the Panda, showing sadness. Mia acted as Danni the Deer, showing calmness. Daya played Bayo the Bear, showing anger. Sheryl acted as the wise Owl the teacher, Jessica was the stage manager, and William was the MC.
At the end, everyone sang the theme song “There is a hole” composed by Ms. Yidan together, and the audience joined in with joy. The shared singing created a warm and connected atmosphere, closing the performance with smiles and appreciation.

The Grade 2 and 3 students expressed to us at the end of the show that they really enjoyed the experience. It was a fun and meaningful way to experience school through an enrichment learning that came from storytelling, acting, music, and the theme song, all woven together into one joyful experience. Some students are now inspired to write, illustrate, and publish their own picture books too.

Special thanks to Mrs. Miao and the second and third graders. Thank you for reading. Have a great life!
