In today’s digital world, the act of handwriting, which requires hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills to work together seamlessly, has become increasingly rare. Yet research continues to show that handwriting strengthens students’ reading and writing abilities on multiple levels.
At IGDVS, we value the importance of good penmanship. Recently, our 4th–6th graders explored the art of calligraphy and practiced their techniques on whiteboards. In their journals, they considered an interesting question for reflection: How is calligraphy like meditation?
You might be surprised by their responses. Students shared that it feels like a form of mindfulness. It helps them slow down, feel calm, focus their attention, enjoy quiet time for themselves, and even find joy in the process.
