On October 15, 2024, a school performance celebrating Spanish heritage was held on the grounds of DVBS. There were plays, dances, and interactive activities, bringing much excitement as the students, teachers, and parents filled the seats.

The performance began with the Spanish heritage trivia, which were questions asked and answered about Hispanic culture. The performance then transitioned into several traditional Hispanic dances and music plays. The dances included the La Raspa dance, in which a student wore a Spanish La Raspa hat and danced with energetic background music. Then, there was the cup drum performance, in which each student had a red plastic cup as a mini drum and hit it to create a harmonious tone. Meanwhile, some students were performing the stick dance. Similar to the cup drummers, the stick dancers hit wooden sticks together to create a clear and rhythmic melody. Next, there was the play about a Hispanic family’s immigration to the United States. The play showed the difficulties a culture faced when it tried to incorporate into another, including language barriers, social discrimination, and so much more.

The day ended with an exciting party. There was a lot of Hispanic food for the students to try out, and most importantly, there was a pinata which the kids took turns to hit. When it was hit open, candies gushed out like spring water, and everyone went scrambling over them on the ground like a flock of vultures.

Overall, the celebration was a new and exciting experience. It makes the students understand why people celebrate Hispanic Month and the importance of one’s culture to one’s identity.
