Table tennis, a game invented in England in the 20th century is a sport in which two players hit a lightweight ball back and forth across a table using small rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follow: players must allow a ball played towards them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side at least once. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules.

On Tuesday, October 5, dorm supervisors Dr. Vega and Mr. Masera organized a special table tennis tournament for students in the residence hall as a source of entertainment. At 7:30 pm, after 90 minutes of exhausting Dragon Dance practice, students eagerly made their way to the Table Tennis Room next door.

Having played table tennis for years, Alston (12), Alan (12), and Andrew (9) were clear favorites to win the event. The tournament began with ruthlessness and domination. Alan Seng quickly secured himself a spot in the semi-finals with two commanding wins, obliterating his first opponent by a score of 11-0. Alston did so in a similar fashion, picking up two quick wins to advance to the semi-finals. For Andrew, however, life wasn’t as easy, since he had to face a very experienced opponent, Dr. Vega. Eventually, Andrew came up on top by a slight margin to squeeze his way into the semi-finals.

The semi-finals kicked off with Alston playing Mr. Masera. Alston managed to build an early lead, and swiftly took the victory to advance to the finals. The other match between Alan and Andrew was not as straightforward, as the two competitors went back and forth in an action-packed match. Once again, Andrew was able to defeat his opponent by a very narrow margin, earning himself a ticket to the finals. The final match was extremely thrilling, with both players exchanging smashes and intense hits. At last, Alston was able to edge out Andrew, solidifying himself as the best table tennis player in the residence hall. As a recognition of his excellent performance, Alston was awarded a Starbucks Gift Card by Dr. Vega and Mr. Masera.
