Every year, math enthusiasts around the country celebrate Pi Day on March 14 because the date 3/14 matches 3.14 – the famous first few digits of 𝝅. Pi Day was founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, who worked at the Exploratorium, a museum of science, technology and arts in San Francisco.

This year, IGDVS was honored to have Mrs. Catherine Shaw, the wife of Mr. Shaw, come to CTTB and introduce us to the history of Pi Day. Led by Mrs. Shaw, the elementary and secondary school students circumambulated in front of the Buddha Hall while holding cards, each with a digit of pi, and reciting  “Om mani padme hum.” Together, they felt the power and magic of pi.

Continuing the tradition, IGDVS also hosted a pi recitation competition, in which students recite as many digits of pi as they can remember within one minute. The elementary school joined the competition this year, with many eager students participating. In the end, Aarya Desai won in the elementary school category, having recited 48 digits after the decimal.

Among the high school students, the winners were as follows:

First Place: Rachel Blythe (Class of 2022)

Second Place: Abigail Gong (Class of 2023)

Third Place: Karen Liang (Class of 2022)

To close this joyous and educational day, Jin Jr Shi brought over apple pie for everyone to enjoy.
